If you are an Iranian importer who wants to buy rice from India, you need more than a price list. You need a supplier who explains how to export basmati rice from India to Iran step by step, how payment works, and which risks to plan for. Jai Ambey Rice Mill is a manufacturer and exporter of basmati and non-basmati rice. This guide explains how we work with Iranian buyers.Iran and Indian Basmati: Where the Market Stands
Iran remains one of India’s biggest rice customers.
ANI, via The Tribune, reports that Iran bought more than 1 million tonnes of Indian rice in the last financial year, up 17%. It is also the second-largest market for Indian basmati.
Demand for Indian basmati hasn’t gone away. Shipping, insurance and payments are the real challenges, which is why a well-prepared supplier matters. What Jai Ambey Rice Mill Offers Iranian Buyers
- Manufacturer-exporter control. We mill, grade and pack the rice ourselves, so batches are traceable and consistent.
- Varieties. We supply 1121 Steam, 1121 and 1509 basmati. S&P Global notes that Iran mainly favours 1121 steam and sella.
- Our brand, The Silver Grain. Buy rice under our own brand, The Silver Grain.
- Custom and private-label packing. We can pack under your brand. Share your artwork, bag size, bag material and label text, and we will tell you what we can supply.
- Export paperwork. We prepare the Indian-side registrations and documents (see the process below).
How We Export Basmati Rice From India to Iran: Step by Step
- Share your requirement. Send the variety, quantity, packing, brand, destination port and target shipment month.
- Approve sample and specification. Agree grain length, broken percentage, moisture and packing in writing.
- Sign the proforma invoice or contract. This fixes price, Incoterm, payment terms, shipment window and port of discharge.
- Register the contract with APEDA. The general requirements are an IEC, an APEDA e-RCMC, a phytosanitary certificate and an RCAC, according to APEDA. APEDA’s RCAC FAQs say each RCAC is valid for 45 days and covers one destination country and one port. Basmati contracts are monitored on an FOB basis, and after issue only the brand name, crop year and port of loading can be amended.
- Production and packing. We pack as agreed, under The Silver Grain or your brand.
- Pre-shipment inspection. APEDA states that exports to Iran require pre-shipment inspection under its trade notice dated 17 June 2014.
- Loading and documents. Expect a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, phytosanitary certificate, RCAC and quality certificate, plus any other document your customs broker requests.
Payment Terms and Compliance
Payment terms are fixed in the proforma invoice before production starts. For first orders, we ask for advance payment or another secured method agreed in writing. Repeat buyers can discuss terms based on their track record with us.We take this approach because risk in this market is real. In January, the Indian Rice Exporters Federation advised exporters to reassess Iranian contracts and use secured payment mechanisms. BusinessToday reported that suppliers had become wary of new deals because of non-payment risk. Maritime Gateway adds that a UAE trade freeze could disrupt payment routes Indian exporters rely on.On sanctions, exporters told ANI that rice is largely exempt on humanitarian grounds, but shipping, insurance and logistics remain the main threats. Rules keep changing, so check with your bank. We follow Indian export and foreign-exchange rules and applicable sanctions requirements. Payments must come through legitimate banking channels, and we will ask for buyer and contract details. We cannot accept arrangements that hide the payer, the buyer or the destination. What Every Iranian Importer Should Know
- Seasonal import window. Iran has restricted rice imports around its harvest. Mehr News reported that the government lifted a four-month ban and began processing import applications in August 2025. Check whether your shipment date falls inside the current permitted window.
- Match shipment timing to the RCAC. The 45-day validity means loading should be scheduled carefully, so confirm the schedule with us before signing.
- Shipping and insurance. The Tribune has reported exporters’ worry about the lack of marine insurance for Iran-bound cargo. Ask for a written shipping schedule and the insurance arrangement before you pay.
- Freight can swing. Quotes can change fast, so ask how long each price stays valid.
- Residue limits and quality. APEDA publishes country-specific maximum residue levels for rice. Ask for a quality report with every lot.
- Labels and local paperwork. Confirm label language and Iranian customs documents with your clearing agent before we print and pack.
